When it comes to holidays going solo is the latest trend!
More and more people are going on solo holidays, with more than one in six people now taking a holiday on their own. People of all ages travel solo for many reasons - because they prefer to be able to do exactly what they like when they like, FOMO (fear of missing out), their friends/partner don’t share their interests or passion for travel, they want to undertake a unique challenge or need a wellbeing break, or because they have time off at a different time to their family and friends. Whatever the reason solo travel is growing fast and the offers available to solo travellers are also on the up.
Many of the companies providing small group tours say that as many as half of the people on their tours are solo travellers, thus dispelling the ‘I’ll be a gooseberry among couples’ myth. There are companies that specialise in solo travel where there is never a single supplement and your own room is guaranteed. With other tour suppliers you will have a choice to share a room or not, and whilst single supplements can apply on some holidays, right now there are several offers around without single supplement.
If you prefer to travel independently then choose your destination and accommodation so that you feel safe and can mix as much or as little as you like with others. Whilst you may choose time on your own, company is also good sometimes so look at pre-booking different activities – cultural activities, foodie evenings or a local excursion – where you will join up with other people during your stay. Booking your holiday through a personal travel consultant will also mean that you have someone you know who is just a message or phone call away who can help out if you have a problem.
